What to Wear for Your Maternity Session: Dressing for the Season, the Setting and Your Story
Let’s be honest, choosing what to wear for your maternity session can feel like a bit of a puzzle. You want to look beautiful, feel comfortable and still be able to move (and breathe). The good news? You don’t have to overthink it; that’s what I’m here for.
When you book your maternity shoot with me, you’ll have full access to my client wardrobe. A carefully curated collection of dresses, vintage silk robes and textured pieces that flatter your bump and photograph like a dream. Think soft, flowing fabrics, earthy tones and textures that catch the light in all the right ways. Basically, outfits that make you feel effortlessly you but with a little extra glow.
Your Outfit Sets the Vibe
What you wear really does set the tone for your photos. A floaty, romantic dress can give your images a dreamy, ethereal feel, while a simple linen slip with a cosy knit feels a little more grounded and intimate. Every texture and tone adds something different, a soft cotton brings calm, a little lace adds romance and neutral layers give you that timeless, relaxed look.
My wardrobe is full of pieces that work beautifully in Cornwall’s landscapes, from coastal light to moorland winds. And don’t worry, I’ll help you choose what works best for your body, the season and the location. No awkward “what should I wear?” moments required.
Dressing for the Season
Each season in Cornwall has its own personality and your outfit should match the mood.
Spring loves light cottons and gentle pattern, soft and fresh, just like the season itself.
Summer is all about easy, breathable fabrics, bare feet and flowy textures that catch the sea breeze.
Come Autumn, I’m obsessed with earthy tones, chunky knits and layers that look incredible against golden moorland or woodland backdrops.
And Winter sessions? They’re pure magic. Think longer sleeves, heavier textures and cosy cardigans, perfect for those crisp days when the light feels golden and quiet.
What is so perfect about the pieces I have chosen for my wardrobe is that multiple pieces can be worn all throughout the year and are adaptable for so many location types. The key is comfort and your confidence. If you can’t move, walk or sit easily, it’s not the right outfit. You should feel relaxed and radiant, not worrying about straps or seams.
Choosing for the Location
Cornwall gives us the dreamiest range of locations; beaches, moors, woods and open fields and each setting calls for something slightly different.
On the beach, lighter tones and floaty fabrics look beautiful as they move with the breeze (and yes, you can absolutely dip your toes in if you fancy).
For the moors, I love muted, earthy colours; rusts, sages and oat tones that blend naturally with the rugged landscape.
In woodland, softer creams or pale tones pop against the deep greens and browns.
Everything in my wardrobe has been chosen with these places in mind, so wherever you choose to go, we’ll find something that feels right for you and your surroundings.
A Wardrobe That Feels Like You
Your maternity session isn’t about dressing up as someone else. It’s about celebrating you; your body, your story and this beautiful, fleeting season of life. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, each one marks a new and deeply personal chapter of motherhood. Taking time to honour your body and the incredible role it plays in nurturing your little one until they arrive earthside is something truly special. These images become memories to treasure and share with your children in years to come.
My wardrobe has been thoughtfully put together to flatter every stage of pregnancy and every body shape. Whether you’re drawn to something romantic and flowing or prefer a simple, textured style, I’ll help you choose what suits your vibe, your confidence and your chosen location.
You deserve to feel strong and beautiful during your session. I know pregnancy can sometimes make you feel disconnected from your own body or unsure of how you look and that’s completely normal. But this is such a powerful season of life, and my hope is that you leave your session feeling confident, seen and truly incredible. When you open your gallery and see yourself through this lens, I want you to smile at this version of you; the one who is growing, glowing and who carried both her own story and another growing within her.
Ready to Start Planning?
When you book your session, we’ll chat through your ideas, the kind of atmosphere you want, where you imagine your photos and what makes you feel your best. From there, I’ll help you pick pieces from the wardrobe that bring it all together.
Every dress and robe you see in this blog is part of my client wardrobe. Each piece has been worn by real mums, through different seasons and in some of Cornwall’s most beautiful locations. Every session tells its own story, but they all share one thing, they feel completely and naturally you.
