Choosing the Right Photographer for You (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)
When you are searching for a photographer, you are not just choosing someone with a camera. You are choosing a person you will share some of your most tender, messy, joyful and fleeting moments with. Someone who sees you, really sees you, and can translate what you feel into images you will hold onto for decades.
And that is why choosing the right photographer for you matters so much.
Not the one your friend loved.
Not the one who is trending on Instagram.
The one whose work feels like it slots into your heart as if it has always belonged there.
What Do You Actually Want From Your Photos?
Before you book anyone, including me, take a moment and ask yourself:
What do I want these photos to feel like, both now and many years from now?
Maybe you are dreaming of soft, nostalgic images that feel like memories the moment you see them.
Maybe you want the beautifully ordinary moments, the way your toddler leans into you, the way your newborn curls instinctively into your chest, the sandy toes, the curls catching the Cornish breeze and the tiny handholds that do not seem big in the moment but will mean everything later.
Whether you are planning an outdoor family photoshoot in Cornwall, a maternity session on one of our beautiful beaches or a quiet newborn session at home, your photographer’s style shapes the way your story is told. Choosing someone whose work already feels like the memories you want to keep is where the magic begins.
My Editing Style and Why It Matters That You Love It
My work leans warm, emotive and a little nostalgic. It has soft, earthy tones, natural light, gentle movement and all the tiny in-between moments most people rush past without ever realising how beautiful they really are.
And honestly, that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that is absolutely fine.
But if you are someone who loves the idea of romanticising the ordinary rhythms of your life, the way you play, gently touch, laugh, settle and breathe, then we will probably be a really good fit. As a maternity photographer in Cornwall, this is where my heart sits: in the quiet, unpolished moments that show who you truly are.
This is also why I offer styling guidance and access to my client wardrobe.
It is not about changing you or making you into someone you are not. It is about helping you feel comfortable, confident and celebrated in a way that still feels unmistakably you. So many of my clients want that gentle balance. They want to feel like themselves, just a little more special for this moment in time.
Thoughtful styling creates a soft, timeless atmosphere that supports that feeling. And my editing style ties it all together by highlighting the little details you will ache for in years to come. The curls blowing across your child's face, the instinctive squeeze of their hand around yours, the way your baby melts into your shoulder, the shift of your bump as you breathe.
Styling sets the scene. Your real life brings the magic.
The Experience Matters Just as Much as the Photos
Something people often overlook is how much the experience shapes the photographs themselves.
Think about how you want to feel during your session. Do you want gentle guidance? Someone who blends quietly into the background? Someone who helps you settle, breathe and feel at ease even if you are not quite sure what to do or whether the children will cooperate?
Every photographer brings their own energy into a session. The right one will help you relax into yourself so your natural connection can unfold in a way that feels genuine and unforced.
My sessions always balance gentle direction with giving you space to be yourselves. Whether it is newborn photography in Cornwall or a family session along the coast, how you feel matters deeply. The experience becomes part of the memory, and the memory becomes part of the photograph.
Look Beyond the Highlights
When you are exploring a photographer’s work, it is tempting to fall in love with the most eye-catching images. They are beautiful, of course, but they are only a small part of the story.
Spend a moment taking in the overall feeling of their work. Notice the tone, the emotion and the sense of ease in the images they share. Do the families look relaxed and connected? Does the work feel honest and heartfelt? Does it feel like something you could see your own story fitting into?
Ask yourself, “Can I imagine our story told in this way? Does this feel like the kind of memory I want to keep?”
If the answer comes easily, that gentle yes in your chest, then you are probably exactly where you need to be.
It is not about seeing complete galleries or analysing every image. It is simply about recognising when a photographer’s way of seeing aligns with how you want to remember this season of your life.
You deserve someone whose work feels familiar and comforting the moment you see it.
